Of Narcissists and Scapegoats
They became so enamored and invested with their newfound religion that any spotlights revealing their own double standards, logical flaws, and conflicting values were merely ignored, obscured, or shouted down before any substantial introspection and self-inquiry could take place.
They took to social media to repost and regurgitate their favorite personality’s daily propaganda, in order to project how virtuous and compassionate they were without actually having sacrificed or accomplished anything themselves. From the comfort and safety of their own homes, they viewed themselves as heroes and revolutionaries until - after several months of incessant chatter about their moral superiority - they got bored and conveniently returned to their hedonistic pursuits.
Meanwhile, most of the people who they claimed to be helping remained in the same place as they were before or ended up even worse off. Most of those waiting to be saved by someone else were never rescued. The few who were cunning enough to exploit the social movement had set themselves up as its only profiteers.
In short, nothing had changed except who these people worshipped and who they demonized when their problems remained unsolved.
